Citizen's Police Academy
What is the Citizen's Police Academy?
The Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is designed to provide citizens with a greater understanding of the West Melbourne Police Department and its operations through class lectures and hands-on experiences. It is our goal to make this course an informative and enjoyable experience for all of those involved.
It is also an opportunity for the police department to learn from participants through discussion and interaction with instructors, classmates, and visiting West Melbourne Police Department commanders and staff. The police department's members and instructors are professional with their presentations and in making all participants feel welcome. The overall objective is to further partnerships in making West Melbourne a great place to live, work, and raise our families!
The Academy includes officer instruction, field trips, and hands on interactive events. Course curriculum includes topics such as criminal investigations, crime scene, criminal law, patrol operations, traffic stops, DUI's, officer safety, defensive tactics, and more.

Entrance Requirements
Interested candidates for the Citizens’ Police Academy must meet the following criteria:
- Be a resident of, or employed by a business in, the City of West Melbourne
- Minimum age of 21 years
- No misdemeanor arrests within two years of application
- No felony arrests within five years of application
- No felony convictions
- No convictions for crimes of violence or domestic violence or moral turpitude
- No DUI or drug convictions in the past four years
- Commitment to attend each session
