[ARCHIVED] City Manager's Update on COVID-19 for July 1

Positive COVID-19 cases have increased significantly in Brevard County since my last operational update on June 17. Cumulative positive cases for the three months from the first Brevard County case on March 16, 2020 through June 16, 2020 was 608. As of yesterday, the cumulative case count had grown to 1,962, a growth of 1,354 in two weeks. In addition, the percent of positive tests has grown over time. The City of West Melbourne posts on our website the State Department of Health’s COVID-19 summary for Brevard County each weekday, and we will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

I arranged for a COVID-19 conference call of the Space Coast City and County Managers on June 18, and the next scheduled conference call is for tomorrow afternoon.

Yesterday, the Brevard County Commission met and considered some expansion of the uses for some of the $105 million in CARES Act funding they have received. The Commission approved the allocation of $4 million for additional food distribution, $750,000 for Career Source Brevard to fund COVID-19 displaced workers in temporary employment agency employment, and $500,000 for supplying personal protective equipment kits to small businesses. They did not take up CARES Act funding for small businesses, not-for-profits, or support for the four chambers of commerce to assist with a portion of COVID-19 business losses, and it is unclear when those considerations might come up again.

The Commission approved, on a 4-1 vote, a proclamation encouraging, but not requiring, businesses to post whether or not customers are expected to wear masks when entering the business.
